The construction of a new primary school in Kashechewan aims to relocate the village's former school, which had been affected by repeated flooding.
In its design approach, COHESIO Architecture sought to reflect the culture of the Cree community through decorative motifs integrated into the interior spaces of the school.
The new human-scale primary school is composed of smaller structures in order to maintain harmony with the other buildings in the village. In keeping with the community's values and in response to the challenges posed by flood risk, a wood-frame structure elevated on piles was selected.
The design focused on a modular solution composed of prefabricated elements assembled on site. The use of Revit modeling and BIM management enabled volumetric design development, coordination among disciplines and the prefabrication of modules in the factory.
Since the opening of the new Kashechewan Primary School, six hundred children from the community come through its doors every day. In the evenings, until midnight, it has become a valued community centre.
