PARISIAN LAUNDRY
Restoration of a laundry room into an art gallery
Montreal, QC
Year of completion: 2002–2005
Use: Cultural institution
Project type: Conservation of historic and heritage buildings
Services: Technical design, Construction supervision
Cost: $1 million

The restoration of this former laundry facility was carried out with meticulous respect for its historical and industrial character. The decision to preserve the name “Parisian Laundry,” carved directly into the Art Deco portico, reflects this approach.
COHESIO Architecture ensured that all interventions remained aligned with the vision of the new owners. A strategy of simplicity was adopted in order to highlight the distinctive features of the original architecture.
The exterior brick masonry walls were preserved and the interior volume was maintained intact. The original factory daylight windows were replaced with modern equivalents. Wood finishes take center stage, adding warmth to the refined and minimal space. Contemporary interventions are clearly distinguishable; discreet and restrained, they echo the noble materials revealed throughout the building.
Awarded the “Mise en valeur du patrimoine” prize for its contribution to the preservation of Montréal’s heritage, the Parisian Laundry project also received the Orange Mention from the heritage conservation organization Sauvons Montréal.
